WSDOT Closes Slide Area on Highway 20, New Concerns With New Slide

SEATTLE - The slide area along Highway 20, east of Newhalem in Whatcom County has now been closed to all personnel working in the area. WSDOT geologist Doug Anderson said, "We are dealing with an active rockslide and the threat of the hillside failing is imminent. More than 1.5 million cubic yards of rock and debris could come crashing down the hillside and onto State Route 20." Anderson was referring to the large section of rock at Falls Creek, about 100 feet west of Sunday's rockslide at Afternoon Creek.

Since the rock slide is located in Whatcom County, at this time Skagit County is monitoring the situation closely.
