STATE STREET HIGH STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN RIPARIAN VEGETATION RESTORATION PROJECT WITH SKAGIT COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION

SKAGIT COUNTY- SKY students from the Pathways Program in the Sedro-Woolley School District will be participating in a riparian restoration project at Skagit County's Howard Miller Steelhead Park in Rockport on Monday, November 25, 2002. The activity is part of the SKY Native Plant Nursery program sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Trail Association which is dedicated to giving our youth an opportunity to learn about our local environment and improve it.
The students will be assisting Skagit County Parks & Recreation to reclaim a section of the riverside from Japanese Knotweed by planting over 500 native species such as Red Osier Dogwood, and Red Alder. The Japanese Knotweed, a non-native herbaceous perennial plant that reaches 12 feet tall and had completely dominated and out-competed native riparian vegetation in this area, was eradicated this summer by The Nature Conservancy.
SKY Pathways students will also learn job skills, gain high school credit, and/or complete a GED. Instructors in the SKY Pathways Program are Michael Bloom and Suzanne Perlmutter.
