Welcome to Skagit County
November 20, 2002 BURLINGTON SENIOR CENTER HOSTS FLOOD PREVENTION BY SKAGIT COUNTY PUBLIC WORKS STAFF SKAGIT COUNTY- The public is invited to attend an informational discussion at the Burlington Senior Center on the topic "Skagit River Flood Prevention/Salmon Restoration," on Friday, December 6 at 11 a.m. Is Skagit County ready for a 100-year flood event? About 30% of Skagit County residents live in the flood plain including the cities of Burlington, Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley. Skagit County and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have completed the first stage of an $8.4 million study to determine an effective way for managing large floods in the Skagit Valley. The devastation of a 100-year flood could result in up to $1 billion in damages, affecting all Skagit County residents. Several alternatives for flood prevention are on the table for discussion, but the Skagit County Commissioners prefer the Swinomish Diversion Channel as the most practical solution. Skagit County is asking for comments and questions from community members and providing material on the project. For further information,
