SKAGIT COUNTY COMMISSIONER MUNKS APPOINTED TO NATIONAL METH ACTION GROUP

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Skagit County Commissioner Don Munks has been appointed by National Association of Counties (NACo) President Bill Hansell to serve on the NACo Meth Action Group.

The Meth Action Group has been give specific areas of the meth abuse problem to address. These include:
Assessing the impacts of methamphetamine production, distribution and use on the nation’s counties;
Developing a coordinated national policy response/agenda that includes the federal, state and local governments and the private sector;
Interacting with external organizations, such as the White House, Congress, federal agencies, drug companies, retailers and other organizations to advance a policy agenda that combats meth, tracks outcomes and hold partners accountable and responsible;
Educating youth and fellow county officials on the dangers of meth and provide tools and support for local efforts in combating the epidemic;
Identifying best practices and local approaches that can be shared with county officials that address education, prevention, enforcement and treatment of meth challenges; and
Encouraging county officials to convene community meetings to discuss danger of meth and raise awareness. Continue to convene outside organizations through NACo to further discussion of meth epidemic.

The Meth Action Group has met twice since it was created and will meet again at the NACo Legislative Conference in March 2006.
