SKAGIT COUNTY CONVICTION FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IS AFFIRMED BY THE WASHINGTON COURT OF APPEALS
SKAGIT COUNTY - On November 28, 2005, Division One of the Washington Court of Appeals confirmed the convictions of Patrick Lynn Morris, for two counts of First Degree Child Molestation and one count First Degree Rape. The appeal occurred after Mr. Morris was convicted of these offenses in Skagit County Superior Court in a two week jury trial before the Honorable Susan Cook. In the appeal the defense alleged that the prosecutor and court had erred in introducing and admitting, respectively, certain evidence from professionals who were testifying about the reports of sexual assault. The Court of Appeals disagreed, and held that such evidence was appropriate. Another claim alleging that the defense attorney involved in the trial was ineffective was likewise rejected.
Morris was sentenced to an extended prison term, and is currently incarcerated with the Washington State Department of Corrections.
An appeal may be filed asking for review from the Washington Supreme Court.
The appeal was handled by Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Erik Pedersen. Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Dona Bracke represented the State of Washington during the trial.
Skagit County Prosecuting Attorney Tom Seguine stated, "The court's opinion affirms and culminates an assertive, skillful and effective prosecution of a difficult case, from trial through appeal, and ensures that Mr. Morris will not be able to repeat this conduct in Skagit County any time soon. It is an example of the excellent work product of the office and particularly of the attorneys and staff involved."
