December 9, 2002 SEDRO-WOOLLEY SENIOR CENTER HOSTS FLOOD PREVENTION PRESENTATION BY SKAGIT COUNTY PUBLIC WORKS STAFF SKAGIT COUNTY— The public is invited to attend an informational discussion at the Sedro-Woolley Senior Center on the topic “Skagit River Flood Prevention/Salmon Restoration,” on Thursday, December 19 at 11 a.m. Is Skagit County ready for a 100-year flood event? About 30% of Skagit County residents live in the flood plain including the cities of Burlington, Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley. Skagit County and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have completed the first stage of an $8.4 million study to determine an effective way for managing large floods in the Skagit Valley. The devastation of a 100-year flood could result in up to $1 billion in damages, affecting all Skagit County residents. Several alternatives for flood prevention are on the table for discussion.
