Skagit County Public Works wrapping up free flood debris program at transfer stations; pays for $25,000 of waste disposal.
Skagit County Public Works will wrap up the free flood debris removal program on Friday, December 31, 2021. The program was implemented during the historic flood events of November 2021.
“We’re happy so many in the community were able to make use of this program,” said Commissioner Lisa Janicki, who currently serves as Chair of the Board. “It’s a small thing but recovering from a flood event can be very costly and we were happy to help cover these waste expenses for community members.”
All in total, Skagit Public Works accepted 577 loads of flood debris totaling 330 tons (660,500 pounds), at a total material disposal cost of $35,868.44.
Skagit County also received a generous in-kind donation for $10,000 from Republic Services to help pay for flood debris disposal.
The decision to close the program at the end of 2021 comes after several days of no new flood debris being received by the Transfer Stations.
Skagit County also submitted private damage assessment estimates to the State totaling over $3 million dollars in business losses and over $11 million dollars in residential losses on Monday, December 20.
It is unclear at this time if a State of Emergency will be declared by the federal government and, therefore, if Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Individual Assistance flood aid will be made available.
