Project Description

The Nookachamps project is located east of Mount Vernon and south of Sedro-Woolley, and encompasses the East Fork Nookachamps Creek watershed. The project area runs from the Cultus mountains to the bridge on Highway 9, and includes connecting lakes and tributaries.

This project is being led by Skagit County. Four alternatives will be examined and ranked for cost, water quality benefit, feasibility, stakeholder support, and other metrics determined by the stakeholders. A preferred alternative will be selected and designed. That design will then be used to request funding to complete the project, and eventually for construction.

This watershed supports a variety of fish including chinook, chum, pink, and coho salmon, and steelhead trout. Their habitat has been significantly modified from various activities such as timber harvesting and road building, stream channelization and diking, and construction of the bridge on Highway 9 over East Fork Nookachamps Creek. These modifications have led to several compounding problems that clog streams and elevate water temperatures, such as increased sediment deposition and a significant increase in invasive reed canary grass, which further traps debris and sediment (such as at Turner Creek). These impacts also increase flood duration and spatial extent without significant continuous maintenance.

Project Goals

The overall goals for this project include:
  • Restore natural hydro-geomorphic processes where possible
  • Improve drainage to reduce flooding extent and duration
  • Improve habitat conditions for salmonids and riparian-dependent species
